Increase Performance by Marketing to Your Employees

I have written quite a bit about the importance of employee engagement. Employees who are engaged and motivated are more productive, more effective, and offer better customer service – This translates into greater profitability for the company.

But keeping your employees motivated isn’t easy. This is something that many of the business owners I’ve worked with over the years have struggled with.

Through the years, I have found that a particular method can be very helpful: market to your employees, in a manner very similar to the way you market to your customers. Below are several ways you can implement this strategy.

Stay consistent with your company brand. What defines your company brand? Great customer service, relentless innovation, consistency, discipline? You get the point. If you expect your employees to buy in to this brand, which you should, you need to consistently reinforce it. You can’t expect your employees to provide great service if you are constantly berating them and making their lives miserable. You can’t expect them to show up on time each morning if you’re constantly running late.

Regularly survey your employees. You seek feedback from your customers, right? Do the same with your employees. Not only will it make them feel valued and appreciated, but you would be amazed at some of the insights my clients have received from their employees over the years.

Commit to adding value to the employee experience. You have often heard me talk about the importance of adding value for your customers… and it’s just as important for your employees. Invest into their career development. Take time to talk about their personal lives. Make every effort to ensure that they are both challenged and fulfilled by their job.

It may be unconventional, but if you can learn to market to your employees just as you do to your customers, you’ll find that they are more engaged and more productive than ever before. Their enthusiasm will be contagious, and the net result will be a better experience for your customers. It’s a win-win scenario. So begin marketing to your employees today!
